Manufacturing, trade and services shape the value chain. German bicycle production includes many component and accessory manufacturers. The trade is also responsible for workshop services. Services provided by the bicycle industry include leasing and sharing.
Bicycle tourism is also an important economic factor. With their sales, bicycle tourists secure many jobs in the hospitality industry.
In addition, there are value-added effects (orders placed by companies) and induced effects (consumer spending by employees). Finally, there are bicycle-related services offered by other industries, such as theft insurance for a bicycle. Further methodological explanations can be found in a detailed industry study.
Together with the Institute for Work and Technology at the Westphalian University of Applied Sciences (IAT), T3 is conducting research into bicycle production in Germany. In the future, employment, working conditions and qualification trends will be analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. There are also plans to record the industry's innovation dynamics and their impact on manufacturers' business models. Finally, international value chains are to be mapped. The IAT's new "Forschung Aktuell" compiles some facts and develops research questions based on them.
